On the third day of internship I was assigned to make a google sheet with information about people who turned in applications for the Fun Run. I had to write their name, last name, phone number, and email. At first, I thought this was going to be a very easy task that wouldn’t take me long to finish. As a joke, I told my internship partner, Anakarimhe that it would take me until the end of the day to finish it. Only that at 4:45 I still wasn’t done with it. I was so stressed out because it was taking me so long to finish, I felt like I wasn’t being productive enough. I didn’t want my mentor to think that I was a very slow person, or that I wasn’t working on it. I was scared of giving him a really bad impression of my work ethic.
I was very stressed and tired, but then I read one of the applicant’s name. She was named Conchita. I don’t mean to make fun of her name, but in the moment it was honestly so funny. I was surprised that someone was actually named like that. It is possible that she didn’t put her real name in, and put a made up name, or maybe it was her nickname. This made my day. As soon as I read it, I showed my friend. In that moment, we both burst out laughing. We laughed for a good five minutes. This helped relieve off my stress so much. It was one of those moments when you laugh so much, your stomach starts to hurt, and then you try to stop, but then you make eye contact with you friend, and the laughing intensifies. After this moment stopped, we both got back to work. We honestly looked so tired by the end of the day.
I know it sounds like a very plain and simple task. Just fill in the information and boom, you’re done. That’s what I thought, but it ended up taking me the whole day. Once I was done, I realized I had filled out the information for about four hundred people. At first, I thought it shouldn’t have taken me that long, but when I talked to Cynthia, the person I work really closely with, she explained to me that those kinds of things take very long to finish. She also told me how she has done that for many events in the past, and she doesn’t finish them until the next day. I was very relieved when she told me this because I then knew that my mentor, Shaun wasn’t going to think that I was a total fail.
